BADBADNOTGOOD’s fifth full-length album, and first without founding keyboardist Matthew Tavares, broaches exciting new sonic territory for the Toronto, Ontario-based jazz ensemble. Largely eschewing the hip-hop and R&B influences that have colored past efforts, Talk Memory is an evocative return to the group’s instrumental roots that showcases an expanded compositional palette inspired by the experience of their live shows. Sprawling opener “Signal from the Noise”—co-produced by Floating Points—begins with an ominous piano-led meditation soon dispelling by the pealing thunder of a fuzzy electric guitar lead. As the storm quells, the ethereal “Unfolding (Momentum 73)” emerges, featuring a delicate saxophone melody and swelling electronic zither embellishments from Laraaji. Contributions from guest musicians throughout meaningfully enhance the trio’s performances without detracting from their raw power, particularly when it comes to legendary Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai. On tracks like the flowing “Love Proceeding” and elegant closer “Talking Meaning,” whose dense arrangement also features flourishes from alto saxophonist Terrace Martin and harpist Brandee Younger, his string arrangements effortlessly elevate. On “Beside April,” Verocai and Karriem Riggins both help build the intense jam to a euphoric crescendo, finding the latter at his frenetic best as a percussive counterpoint to the impressively nimble guitar work, only equalled in intensity on the gloriously captivating “Timid, Intimidating.” With Talk Memory, BADBADNOTGOOD achieve a collective balance and harmony through collaboration that portents even greater things to come from the group.
