Future & Metro Boomin // We Don’t Trust You
The combination of Future and Metro Boomin is a well known cheat code. The MC’s fluid mumble is rendered absolutely spellbinding when set atop the trap producer’s dark dreamscapes and woozy beats, resulting in some of the finest pop the trap era has to offer. We Don’t Trust You is mostly a middling affair, but it sounds so good, it doesn’t matter. Nothing can detract from the revelry. Every track plays like a victory lap, best exemplified on “Young Metro,” featuring The Weeknd. The record hits a strong patch on “Like That,” with Kendrick Lamar taking shots at J. Cole and ending the GOAT debate. The brassy synth tone is bold and nearly works. Rick Ross sounds at home on the soulful “Everyday Hustle,” which features an album-best beat switch that recalls J.I.D.’s “Surround Sound.” “WTFYM” is gloriously indignant, but it’s bonus track “Where My Twin @“ that threatens to steal the show entirely with its more soft-spoken production approach. As perhaps the premiere trap talents of their generation, it’s nice to hear Future and Metro continuing to grow and near the top of their game.
