Pastel Coast’s Sun

Hailing from the shores of the Boulogne-sur-Mer, the aptly named French indie outfit Pastel Coast employ muted textures to conjure dreamy pop atmospheres perfect for everyday moments of quiet contemplation. Taking queues from groups like Air and Phoenix, the Quentin Isidore-led quintet’s sophomore LP, Sun, draws its name and chief inspiration from its namesake celestial body, radiating a mollifying warmth through its 10 song track list. Highlights include the driving auto-tuned opening cut “Distance” (which coyly concludes by quickly referencing the melody of Edvard Grieg’s iconic “Morning Mood” with an airy synth lead), pulsating meditation “Helios” and jangling, staccato guitar-led “Sunset,” which, along with “Radiant,” close the record with a cinematic flair not unlike watching the sun descend in the sky after a satisfying day. Bright and transporting, Sun is audio sorbet at its finest.
