STRFKR // Parallel Realms
STRFKR’s approach to music making has always been soft-spoken and multidimensional, relying on sturdy grooves to join lush sythscapes and ambient textures into bittersweetly danceable pop. On this and every other measure, Parallel Realms is the group’s most vital work in years, perfectly showcasing these sonic strengths with a varied, yet cohesive set of tracks. Aided by a mix with just the right amount of sauce from Chris Coady (whose credits with Beach House and Yeah Yeah Yeahs seem most relevant here), tracks like “Holding On” and “Waited For It” recall the otherworldly Reptilians, while “Always / Never” and “Under Water / In Air” sport newfound swagger. The French-featuring “Chizzlers” is also a delightful departure, adding some angularity and post-punk vibe to the proceedings.
