Summer School’s Moments of Clarity

Josh Wilson has been making music under the sobriquet Summer School for the better part of a half-decade, marrying the relentless funk grooves of disco with a penchant for dark, moody explorations of the human condition. His latest EP, Moments of Clarity, represents a further perfection of this formula, showcasing Wilson’s continued growth as an artist. His dulcet baritone opens “Terrible Things,” an ode to self-improvement propelled by the one-two punch of sumptuous synth stabs and a trebly bassline, while “Sobering Up” channels the sleekness of Off The Wall with infectious rhythm guitar and horn fanfare. Ultimately, it is the touching “Make Me Better” and gloriously relaxed "Coast” that impress most, flaunting two of best melodies to yet grace a Summer School project over spacious, ruminative arrangements. Reflective and consistently gratifying, Moments of Clarity is not to be missed, sporting Wilson’s finest production and songwriting work to date.
